D&T Middle Distance squad do double duty at Chiltern League and Club Championships

A reduced group of 17 D&T Middle Distance Squad members ran strongly at the third stop of the intensely competitive 2018-19 Resultsbase Chiltern League series, which doubled as our club cross country championships with medals up for grabs across all age groups.

The race took place at Stopsley Common in Luton over a course that had was much softer underfoot after the recent rains, making a change from the dryer conditions of previous races, with the U17 age groups having to tackle a steep and very muddy hill at the end of their lap.

Once again, Sam Burnell and Indira Patel reached the podium in their respective age groups with fine second-place finishes. Sam was just five seconds behind his rival from Bedford and County over the 4.1k course, and led home the U15 boys team to a strong third place on the day, enough to keep the boys in first overall after three races, ahead of powerhouses Bedford and County AC and Chiltern Harriers – and he also takes home a gold medal for winning the club championship.

Sam was strongly supported by Jack Raine in 10th and Thomas O’Reilly in 18th, silver and bronze in the U15 club championships, along with Joseph Chamberlain (23rd) and Thomas Durrant (25th).

Indira, meanwhile, was the sole U17 female athlete in contention on the day, taking home another club championship gold for her superb 2nd finish, just 20 seconds behind the winner. On her own, Indira kept the club in 7th place in the team standings but without teammates to back her up,  the U17 women fell two spots to 6th place in the league after three races.

Freddie Truman-Williams and Angus Saunders kept the U17 men’s hopes in the league alive with their 13th and 23rd place respectively on the day, winning club gold and silver and finishing 7th in the team standings, down one place to 5th after three matches.

In the U15 girls race, Grace Hucknall was first across the line for D&UT in 21st place, taking home club gold, followed by Katie Mitchell, silver and Jessica Hill, bronze. The U15 girls finished 8th on the day as a team and dropped one place to 6th in the team standings after three races.

Isabelle Jelfs was the first U13 girl across the line, in 12th place overall and 1st in the club championship. She was followed by Brooke Evans (silver), Milla Walsh (bronze), Indie Frost and Amy Lane. The U13 girls were 4th on the day, and remain 5th after three races.

In the youngest age group, where Divisions 1 and 2 run together, Talia Williams finished a solid 38th out of 70 girls, and took home club gold for her efforts.

In the individual standings,  Sam remains in second place overall in the U15 boys standings after three races, with a good chance of grabbing top spot if he keeps up his fine form. He is joined in the U15 boys top-10 by Joseph, 7th, and Jack, 8th, with Jamie Bailey not far behind in 16th, Tom O’R in 17th and Thomas D in 27th; the boys are still on track to retain their number 1 spot in the team rankings.

Indira, for her part, is third in the U17 women’s standings after three races, on five points, same as the points earned by St Albans Striders runner Keira Stern, and she could move up to second with two more strong performances.

Stella Whitlum, meanwhile, is at 12th in the U15 girls standings, with Grace in 15th, while Isabelle and Brooke are ranked 14th and 15th respectively in the U13 girls, with Milla at 20th.
