U13 girls and U15 boys in top five finishes at NWLL cross country

By Jonathan Edwards, team manager

A generally positive day for the Middle Distance Squad at the second leg of the North West London XC League series which took place on Saturday 28th October at Kingsbury, London NW9. Club athletes competed in five of the events, U11, U13 and U15 girls as well as the U13 and U15 boys.  These are the events the squad will be concentrating on for the rest of the season in this series. Older squad members had a training session over at St Albans under the guidance of head coach Mike Dunphy.

Team(s) Of the Day: The U13 Girls (Olivia Edwards, Stella Whitlum, Amy Lane, Summa Jo Bradley and Charlotte Hilton) and U15 Boys (Michael Armstrong, Thomas Durrant, Ethan Brimmer, Jack Raine and Tom O’Reilly) who all ran strongly and achieved competitive placings.

Individual Performance(s) of the Day: Best placings were achieved by Olivia Edwards (U13G), second; Stella Whitlum (U13G), third; Michael Armstrong (U15B), third; and Amy Cassidy (U15G), fourth. Olivia gave a strong performance despite suffering with a cold for the last few days which affected her breathing as the race developed, Stella is working hard and looking far more competitive this season. Michael continues to show good form and Amy just seems to come alive at XC events, a tough competitor.

Special Mentions: Our new U11 girls, Milla Walsh and Evie Light, who made very successful XC debuts. Both demonstrated great commitment and achieved strong placings. We look forward to seeing more of these young runners at future events. Thomas Durrant (U15B) and Ethan Brimmer (U15B) ran excellent races. Thomas would have done even better had he not taken a wrong turn.

Thank you to all our runners for working so hard and turning up in numbers especially over the half-term break. Thank you also to parents for all your support and commitment. It is greatly appreciated. Apologies from the team manager for arriving later than he would have liked due to losing Lottie the dog on her morning walk, only for Lottie to miraculously work out her own way home, arriving sometime before the team manager, and traffic.

Finally I would like to hear from parents who may feel able to help with warm-ups and course walking. The squad has grown to the point where additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Next Outing:  Saturday 11th November 2017: Chiltern League Series (Leg 2) Milton Keynes, Teardrop Lakes and The English Schools’ Athletic Association Cross-Country Cup, Regional Finals, Bedford.
