Congratulations to all our club athletes who competed in the D&T Club Championships last weekend, and a big thanks to all coaches, officials, timers, organizers, parents and volunteers for contributing to a smashing event.

All the athletes performed to their best ability on the day, with dozens of PBs, four club records and a host of medals to be awarded at the Club Presentation evening next month.

We’d like to highlight the four club records and the 24 club championship best performances that were earned on the day.

Of the four new all-time club records, three were set by the women: Indira Patel (U17 women) and Mandy Jackson (VF60) each earned new PBs and club bests in the 5000m, while Abbie Parker broke a long-standing record in the U15 girls 300m. Our fourth record was set by disability star Pierce Reynolds, who smashed his own record for the javelin with a throw of 12.37m. Pierce has now set 18 club bests so far in 2018, while Mandy has set nine. Indira, recently returned from a couple of years in Singapore, has set the Middle Distance squad alight with two new U17 records so far this year, while Abbie grabbed her first club best with her inspired run on Sunday.

Indira (No. 1) and Mandy (No.7) are pictured above in the group shot of the 5000m runners

The 24 Club Championship best performances, recorded by our record keeper Paul Burton and covering all club championships held since 1996, comprise 10 bests on the track and 14 in the field. Eleven records were set by the women and girls while 13 were set by the men and boys (see table below).

The age group with the most Club Championship bests was the U15 boys, who were boosted by the three records set by Pierce, with his mark in the 100m wheelchair and his two throwing bests, along with James Isaacs’ shot record and Joe Chamberlain’s performance in the 1500m.

The U15 girls posted four new Club Championship bests, from four girls, Abbie in the 300m, Harriet Beeby-Winn in the high jump, Katie Webb in discus and Megan Maddison in javelin.

The U17 women also grabbed four Club Championship records: in addition to Indira’s 5000m mark, disability phenom Esme O’Connell added two bests for her long jump and javelin performances, and Amy Wright posted a new best for the hammer – incidentally, throwing further than any other competitor, male or female, of any age group, on the day!

Sprint standout Destiny Ogali, currently ranked number 1 in the UK for the U17 men’s 100m and ninth in the 200m, recorded two new Club Champ bests in those events.

The U13 boys showed their strength in the throwing events, with Alex Jackson scoring new Club Champ bests in shot and discus and Rhys Harries doing the same in the javelin. On the girls’ side, Brooke Evans earned a new Club Best mark for her PB run in the 800m, where she finished well ahead of the rest of the field.

Our U20 athletes Remi Jessop and Rhys Rowlands scored a Club Best mark apiece: Remi in the 200m and Rhys in the 2000m steeplechase.

On to the vet categories, then, where Peter Stansbury and Richard Emptage equalled the Club Championship record for the VM50 high jump, while Mandy continued her fine run of form by earning a new Club Champ best for the VF60 in the 5000m.
